An Over-My-Head Epiphany

It was a Tuesday night a few weeks ago.  I was on a stage, sweating, singing, pray-thinking. About Jesus, my inadequacy, the art He makes out of my junk, the people in front of me and the art He wants to make out of their junk: the usual.

I looked up and noticed something I hadn’t noticed until that point… Probably because I had my eyes closed for most of the time… (the metaphors are kicking in).

Our resident lighting ‘artiste’ - “3rd  Grade” we call him - is a talented man.  I thought he must be pulling out the big guns and doing something extra spesh…  from the back of the building streaming toward me and over my head were hundreds of shafts of light, pulsing from a single point and fanning out toward a destination somewhere behind me.

I must have stared up at this for a few songs in a row.  It was beautiful.  Symphonic.  Cinematic.  Each ray of light would turn, move, change colour - dancing in sync with all the others yet completely itself.  I had never seen 3rd  Grade use this effect before and was steadying myself to give him a big pat on the back afterward, when I got the urge to turn around and look at where the shaft-light-things were heading.

And as it turned out, 3rd Grade’s whizz bang trick was no whizz bang trick at all.  It was only the projector, casting the live camera feed onto the screen above the stage.  All the beams of light were travelling from the same origin, going forward and coming together to create a single, moving image.

Maybe that’s not unlike you and I and how we feel sometimes.  Kinda dancing along alone in the darkness.  But maybe if we could see things from a different angle - above or below - or a different dimension outside our time-bound context – eternity - we would see what we are… part of the greater visual chorus, making up a small but essential pixel in the great big picture God is creating through the collision of our unredeemed humanity and his great redemption plan.

I should open my eyes more often.

God bless you brooke!

i loooooooooooove this!! its amazing that the most simplest of things can provide such insight into the heart of God for us.

just re-reading The Shack and it too is just like this epiphany.. simple things in life reminding us of the bigger picture God has for humanity.

loved this Brooke!!

much love.

Brilliant. God seems to be all about showing us things when our eyes are open. And a lot of the time it's the little things that are profound.

wow* awesome!*

THANK YOU for the insight!!

YES!!

That sounds amazingly beautiful, even though it's something as simple as an overhead Projector. We should all open our eyes more often, to just look... =)

And also, your voice is awesomely beautiful, and so is your passion. I hope I can sing like you one day Brooke!! =D

Is there a way for you guys to post the set list from the Birmingham concert? I recognized some of the songs, but others I didn't. I would like to know which ones to purchase on itunes. Thanks!!!!

Hi, i have no clue if you are read these comments, but if you do, i jsut wanted to say to you and the whole rest of the band thank you. i was at the Birmingham show last night and i KNOW God was there!

Up until last night, i had been floating farther and farther away from the Lord. I went through a rough patch, i had gotten into the wrong crowd. i became depressed. i hated myself. i hurt myself and i attepmted to kill myself twice. But i have always been involved with my youth group. so last night they invited me to go and see yall.

Last night, i rededicated myself to Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour.
i wanted to tell you a BREIF story of what ive gone through, because i feel if you didnt know, i couldnt tell you just HOW important last night was to me.

So once again, thank you, the band, the speakers that joined yall last night from the botom of my heart.

God Bless!!

Mrs. Ligertwood,

Thank you and all the crew keeping up and doing this blog. With stories and experiences like this one it makes one think; " how can I be more, do more and love more for our great God?" Thank you for living the lifes that God has made you for and sharing and encouraging all others you love God.

it's so amazing to read what u wrote, god is really moving in this generation and i believe that jesus has placed his annoitting on u guys for this lost and hurting generation u guys really inspired to go to that next level of worhip ilov u

be safe and always stay prayed up
because the enemy been defeated

Umm, yeah, that was way deep. I was like super-excited to seconds ago and now I'm in a somber reflective state.

Amen!! That's good stuff!!!

After joining in the praise & worship service (I can't call it a concert...concert just doesn't capture the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that I bore witness to last night), at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Maryland, I was overwhelmed by the passionate songs of praise being sung by thousands in unison to the Lord, our God...everyone looking unto Him, not to you guys (though you rocked!)...but their hearts were being poured out to the Lord.

All I could think and pray (yesss...pray-thinking...got it!), is Lord let this not be just emotion...if all of these people...young and old would take the passion that they're displaying right here, right now...into their day-to-day lives, it would transform Maryland...Washington DC...Virginia. If we all take our place in the body...in the church...we will see the fullness of the Lord Jesus manifest in this world. If we all live up to the "light" that the Lord desires to reveal to and through us what an awesome masterpiece we will see!

Be encouraged, and continue to let the Lord lead your "lights" as you dance, move, turn, change-color and are cast upon the screen that is set upon the stage of this earth. I will be praying for you all, and thanking the Lord for you!!

May the Lord bless and keep each of you in His loving grace, His comforting peace, His perfect will, and His unwavering love!

Malaka

That's awesome!

Thanks for sharing. That's an awesome picture of what God is doing. It's a good reminder because sometimes you can feel like your part doesn't make any sense, but God really is the master artist and He makes something so beautiful each and every time.

God Bless the good page

It's a very nice story of yours..
By the way..may I just know who's B-Lig??

Well I must say one thing. I saw that you posted this blog on May 29, 2009. That very night I witnessed my favorite band ever, the band I worship Christ to every day, the band I have been longing to not just see live, but worship with in one place together...On that night you came to a place that I completely fell in love all over again with God only a year and a half ago. You came to my favorite place of worship and blessing. You stopped in a place called The Basement in a little ol town called Birmingham,Alabama. In the same sanctuary that I worship Jesus in almost every single week,I got to come on not just a Tuesday night, but a Friday night, to worship my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I just want you to know that I was truly, truly blessed that night. I know God gets all the glory, but I also want to thank you as well. I want to thank you for answering God's call on your music ministry and helping lead so many people in worship, even across the earth here in Birmingham. Thank you and I look forward to worshipping with you again soon. Please come back to The Basement again...

deep oke..

amazing! [:

I've always wondered who did the visual worship on your tours. Would love to see more of 3rd Grades work if it exists anywhere virtually.

Brook,

Your Passion inspires me to love the Lord more. I listen to "Hosanna" to start every day of my life, the lyrics sum up the reason for my being- to praise the King of Glory, await his return, rise with selfless faith and dedicate all for his kingdom.

You have an annointing, may God continue to bless you and all the team.

To the great I AM be all the Glory.........

WOW! God is working in radical ways through you guys. My friend and I attended your worship service at the basement. And I must indeed say that God showed up and showed out. My friend and I are praying for an extreme move in our youth group. We have noticed that lately, it has just been goin through the motions. We are sick and tired of sitting back and just doing church. We want WORSHIP. You showed a true worship experience. Thank You. Pray for us as we challenge our youth group to not settle, but crave to be closer to Christ through worship. To God be ALL the glory and honor and praise.

God Bless You, ¨cause you are working to change the world singing a new song of freedom
